Most manufacturers won't publish prices at all, which makes early-stage budgeting harder than it needs to be. So here are honest market price bands, researched from published wholesale prices, B2B marketplace listings and official export statistics, and checked against what the paper itself costs. Your exact price depends on the seven factors in our cost drivers guide, so treat these as orientation, not an offer: the only real number is a quotation against your specification. Bands last reviewed: September 2026.
Price bands — India domestic (per bag, ex-GST, ex-factory)
| Format | Plain | Printed (1–2 colours) | Typical order |
|---|---|---|---|
| SOS grocery bags (60–90 GSM) | ₹1.20 – ₹4 | ₹2 – ₹5.50 | 5,000–100,000+ per month |
| V-bottom flat handle | ₹2.50 – ₹5 | ₹3.50 – ₹7 | 2,000–50,000 per order |
| Square bottom flat handle | ₹3.50 – ₹8 | ₹5 – ₹10 | 1,000–50,000 per order |
| Square bottom twisted handle | ₹5 – ₹14 | ₹7 – ₹18 | 500–25,000 per order |
| Paper mailer bags (self-seal) | ₹2 – ₹7 | ₹3 – ₹9 | 1,000–50,000 per order |
| Oil & grease resistant (food service) | ₹2 – ₹7 | ₹3 – ₹8 | 2,000–100,000 per month |
Within each band, the low end is a small, light brown-kraft bag at volume; the high end is a large, heavy or white-kraft bag on a shorter run. White kraft typically adds 15–30% over brown. Freight to your city and 18% GST are extra. Small packs bought from distributors (a few hundred bags at a time) usually sit 20–40% above these factory bands.

A useful cross-check: official trade statistics put India’s paper bag exports (HS 4819.40) at about $1.70 per kilogram on average — $73.8 million for 42.9 million kg in 2023 — with shipments to the US and UK averaging around $1.6–1.7/kg. A medium flat-handle carrier weighs roughly 35 g, so it lands near $0.06 at that average. Heavier, twisted-handle and printed bags sit above the average; plain grocery bags below it.
FOB means the price includes everything up to loading on the vessel at Nhava Sheva or Mundra. Add ocean freight, insurance, destination charges, and your country's import duty to get landed cost — the calculation is walked through in the importing guide.
Why is there a 2–3× spread inside each band?
- GSM: a 120 GSM bag contains ~50% more paper than an 80 GSM bag of the same size — and paper is typically 35–50% of an unprinted bag’s price.
- Size: cost follows paper area; an Extra Large uses two to four times the paper of a Small in the same format.
- Handles: a twisted paper handle pair costs the maker around ₹0.75–0.85 bought in thousands, plus the patch and gluing — the main reason twisted-handle bags start where flat-handle bags finish.
- Volume: setup amortizes across the run — unit prices step down visibly at roughly 5k / 25k / 100k thresholds.
- Print: each colour needs its own photopolymer plate (in India, roughly ₹0.80–₹1.40 per square centimetre — a few hundred to a thousand rupees per colour for a typical bag panel), which is why short printed runs cost noticeably more per bag.
- Paper market: kraft prices move with pulp, waste-paper and energy costs; quotes carry ~30-day validity for this reason.
Budgeting shortcuts that hold up
- Retail carry bag programme (India): a mid-size printed flat handle bag at moderate volume typically budgets at ₹6–9 per bag delivered.
- Grocery checkout (India): plain SOS at volume typically budgets at ₹2–3.50 per bag.
- Imported branded mailers (DTC): landed cost typically runs 1.5–2× the FOB price once freight, clearance, and duty are added at LCL volumes; closer to 1.2–1.4× at FCL volumes.
How these bands were set
The bands combine four independent views of the market, so that no single listing or claim sets the numbers:
- Published wholesale prices from an Indian packaging distributor’s web store — for example brown flat-handle carriers at ₹5.90–₹8.85 per bag and brown SOS bags from ₹2.40 per bag in packs of 250–1,000 (these small-pack prices include distributor margin and sit above factory bands).
- B2B marketplace listings (IndiaMART, TradeIndia) — plain SOS bags from about ₹1.20–₹2.50, 100 GSM twisted-handle bags from about ₹4.50–₹6.50, self-seal kraft mailers from ₹1.50–₹5, and grease-resistant food bags from ₹2–₹7 per piece.
- Official export statistics — UN Comtrade data via the World Bank’s WITS for HS 4819.40, giving the average export value per kilogram quoted above.
- Raw material prices — kraft paper in India was reported at about US$0.39–0.44 per kg in the first half of 2026, with domestic bag-grade kraft typically quoted at ₹30–₹50 per kg.
Each band was then checked bottom-up: the paper in each of our standard sizes, plus handles, printing and conversion, has to land inside it.
