What size bag or pouch do I need for coffee beans?

Short answer · coffee beans (250 g pack) to pack and store

Aluminum Inner Paper Bags, Medium

15 × 25 cm (6 cm V-fold) · 6" × 10" · rated to 1 kg (estimated)

Roasters pack coffee in pouches that settle around the beans: 250 g of whole beans fills a pack of roughly 9 × 5.5 × 20 cm, and 1 kg one of about 13 × 8 × 27 cm. Ground coffee is denser and takes a little less room. Coffee loses aroma fast in plain paper, so for anything that sits on a shelf the pouch should have a barrier lining — an aluminium inner layer keeps oxygen, moisture and light out.

What to watch for

  • Use a barrier-lined pouch for retail coffee; plain kraft is fine for beans sold to drink within days.
  • Allow headroom above the beans to fold and seal the top, or fit a tin-tie.
  • Whole beans take about 20% more space than the same weight of ground coffee.
